A life without goals is like being at sea with no wind.
You can live a life that is fine. Very okay. Exceedingly alright. You can go about your every day, enjoying the sea breeze and sunshine…but after a while, you’ll start missing land. And if the wind is not blowing you in a new direction, you’d better have a paddle to take yourself where you need to go.
Goals are your paddle.
Never Feel Guilty for Dreaming
I’ve often struggled with the idea that I should be satisfied with the amazing situation I have. Who am I to complain about a cushy job, nice apartment, and easy life? But I still find myself wanting more.
And I’ve come to accept that this is okay. It’s a good thing to want more (and to be grateful for what you have). Once you stop wanting more, you stop pushing yourself and you stop growing as a person.
I’ve always appreciated this quote:
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”
― Henry Ford
Once you decide that you have everything you want, or rather, you’re fine with everything you have, then you stop doing anything new. To me, life is about growth. And in order to grow, you need to want.
The Difference Between Dreams and Goals
I’ve talked about moving to Colorado since I was in high school. Having been born and lived there when I was young, I’ve always felt this weird need to go home. But it wasn’t until this past year that I decided it was time to turn this dream into a reality: I needed a goal.
What’s the difference between a Dream and a Goal?
A dream is something that may or may not happen.
A goal is something you either succeed or fail to achieve.
So I added a deadline to my dream:
I want to live Colorado before the end of 2016.
I will either achieve my goal of living in Colorado by the end of the year, or I will fail to meet this deadline. No longer will I leave this up to the universe. I’ve decided it’s time to take action and make this change happen.
I think I’ve always felt a light breeze pushing me in this direction, but now, paddle in hand, I finally have what I need to get going.
