Exciting news! Mike and I officially moved in together!
Obviously, this is a huge step in our relationship. But it’s also exciting because I’m finally moving out of my parent’s house! (again.)
For the past year, I’ve been house-sitting for my family while they prepared to move out to Colorado and now that they’re here, I’m back out into the wide world of apartments and leasing offices.
After a very short, but thorough search, we found an incredible one-bedroom with a den that is just perfect. It’s bright, filled with natural light, and cozy — we couldn’t be happier.
Of course, moving is always an experience in itself. We’ve had a whirlwind time trying to get everything into the apartment and organized. Turns out, when two people have both lived alone and furnished entire apartments by themselves, trying to fit everything into a single apartment is challenging. I’m starting to think there was something to the whole, ‘live with your parents and never buy anything until you’re married’ idea. I mean sure, it’s flawed. But show me an apartment with enough storage for everything two independent adults have accumulated over the years!
But anyway, here are five more thoughts I’ve had since moving into our new apartment.
1. I’m definitely going to kill my plants.
The day before we moved, I got really excited and bought a bunch of beautiful plants to decorate our new home. Unfortunately, I misremembered what kind of lighting we get in the apartment and purchased plants that love direct sunlight. This is a problem, you see, because we have north-facing windows. That means great light, but none of it comes directly into the apartment. Ideal for keeping our A/C bills low, but not for maintaining beautiful flowery plants. We’ll see how long they last, but unfortunately, I have a feeling these will become gifts to friends with sunnier homes and I’ll have to get some new plant babies for the apartment…
2. We will never escape IKEA.
The funny thing about IKEA furniture is that you think you’ll grow out of it. Eventually, you’ll shop at fancy places with nice quality, pre-assembled furniture. But what you never anticipate is how you’ll end up moving and reusing all the IKEA furniture you had in college so when it comes time to finish furnishing your big-girl apartment, you end up with more IKEA furniture because it matches what you already have. Oops.
3. We have too many bowls.
Mike and I went shopping right before moving into the apartment (at IKEA, shocker) to pick up some new dishes. We ended up getting a 6-piece set with plates and bowls. We then proceeded to buy three additional sized bowls for various reasons. It just felt excessive.
4. WE NEED MORE BOWLS!
Of course, after we moved into the apartment, we found that the extra bowls we bought were amazing so we actually went back to IKEA to buy MORE to make sure we had matching sets for all of the new bowls. We now of 20 individual bowls in four different sizes. Because why not?
5. Why am I always cold!?
I think our thermostat is broken because it keeps saying it’s 70+ degrees in the apartment, but I am constantly chilly. I guess I need to buy a new pair of slippers because Mike seems totally fine. At least we won’t be super hot this summer! And with the first 90-degree behind us, I think I’m actually much happier about this than I was when we first moved in. Winter will be another story, but at least you can bundle up in the cold.
What is your favorite place to relax in your home?
I adore every inch of our space, but so far we’ve spent most of our time in the kitchen or in the living room watching Arrested Development.
